Before you pay for a windshield

Insurance and payment for auto glass in the Carolinas

There is one piece of South Carolina law worth knowing before anyone quotes you for a windshield, and most drivers have never heard of it.

South Carolina: safety glass, no deductible

South Carolina requires insurers writing comprehensive coverage to repair or replace damaged safety glass without applying your deductible. The rule sits in Title 38, Chapter 77 of the South Carolina Code.

In plain terms: if you carry comprehensive on a South Carolina policy, a rock chip repair and in most cases a full windshield replacement should not cost you your deductible. Plenty of SC drivers have been quietly paying $500 deductibles for years without realising the state had already settled the question.

North Carolina: your deductible applies normally

North Carolina has no equivalent statute. Comprehensive works the usual way, which means a $500 deductible against a windshield that costs less than that makes the claim pointless. For chips and most door glass in NC, paying us directly is nearly always the cheaper route — and we will say so rather than let you file a claim that costs you money.

You choose who does the work

Insurers maintain network arrangements and will often steer you toward a particular provider. That is a suggestion, not a requirement. The vehicle is yours and so is the choice, in both states.

Insurance questions

Is windshield replacement really free in South Carolina?

For a lot of drivers, yes. South Carolina Code 38-77-280 requires insurers to repair or replace damaged safety glass without applying the comprehensive deductible. If you carry comprehensive coverage on a South Carolina policy, that is the rule your carrier works to. It is not a promotion and it is not something we control — it is state law.

Does that apply to my North Carolina policy?

No. North Carolina has no equivalent statute, so your comprehensive deductible applies normally. For a small chip repair, that usually means paying directly is cheaper than involving a carrier at all — and we will tell you when that is the case.

Will making a glass claim raise my premium?

Glass is filed under comprehensive rather than collision, and comprehensive claims are treated differently from at-fault claims. Rating practice varies by carrier, so the honest answer is to ask yours directly. What we can tell you is what the job costs without insurance, so you can make the comparison with real numbers.

Do I have to use the shop my insurer suggests?

No. You choose who works on your vehicle. Insurers commonly have network arrangements and will steer toward them, but the choice is yours in both Carolinas.

What if I do not want to involve insurance at all?

That is completely fine and it is common, especially for chip repairs and door glass. We quote the job directly, free, and you pay by cash, card, Zelle, Venmo, PayPal or Cash App.
